About Lahui Kai Stand Up Paddle Boards:

12'6 Race:  The stock race board of the Lahui Kai lineup. Master Shaper, Adrian Birse, has taken the design developed over a decade of championship Molokai to Oahu performances by Jamie Mitchell and Mick Di Betta and adapted it to fit the demands of the worlds toughest SUP race: the Battle of the Paddle. This board has been successfully ridden by team riders Shakira Westdorp, Brandi Baksic, Billy Watson and Jamie Mitchell to top four finishes in the BOTP for the last two years; including 1st place men's and women's Elite and Relay races in 2009. Hand shaped in Australia.

12'6 and 14' Hollow Molded Construction (HMC):
In 2010, Lahui Kai became the first elite stand up paddleboard manufacturer to release a traditional hollow molded board to the public. Lahui Kai Paddleboards is revolutionizing the sport once again with this highly refined and tested manufacturing technique, allowing them to provide the same boards paddled by today's elite sup racers at a reasonable price. (Prices vary depending on your choice of layup.)

Why Hollow Molded Construction (HMC)?

Easy, because traditional hollow molded construction boards provide an extremely high level of production accuracy, strength, durability, surface quality and torsional stiffness, and have the added benefit of easily adjustable weight. Although there is a larger investment in the tooling, this process also allows us to produce the same boards paddled by today’s elite standup paddlers for a reasonable price.

How can you make a board more durable or lighter weight?

Durability and weight are easily adjusted by simply changing the materials used when building the stand up paddleboard. This is called “Changing the Layup.” Fiberglass (very strong and durable), Carbon / Kevlar (extremely durable and light) and Carbon Vacuum (extremely light) boards are available. We can quickly and confidently balance weight and durability by using this traditional construction method paired with a proprietary, overlapping internal seam. The gel coat provides a quality durable high-gloss finish and color that will last.

Is this Hollow Molded Technology proven?

Yes, hollow molded construction has been used for decades to build the strongest and most durable Surf Skies and Kayaks in the world. 99% of the worlds OC1 and Ocean Kayaks are manufactured using this method and a variety of tried and true layups.

What is an over-lapping seam?

Mick DiBetta and Adrian Birse have developed an overlapping seam to provide strength and torsional stiffness to each stand up paddleboard made with this method. The design transforms what has traditionally been the weakest aspect of a molded construction board into its strongest.

Is this a board that an Elite Standup Paddler would train or race on?

Each board is an exact copy of the “Plug,” a perfectly shaped board that has been tested to perfection by Lahui Kai’s elite SUP team. A recent Australian Stand Up Paddle board sprint race was won by a Lahui Kai elite racer while paddling the original 14’ Orca plug!

How do I fix my hollow molded construction sup if it does break or leak?

The good news is that when compared to traditional foam and fiberglass construction boards, the hollow boards are built tough. Depending on the layup, these boards can withstand extremely high temperatures and mild to moderate impact with little to no visible wear and tear.

Hollow Molded Construction, or clam shell molds, have been around for decades, so any marina or boat shop should have a local contact able to repair boards with no special training. If your local lake, river or harbor has an outrigger paddling club they will definitely know where a board can be fixed for a good price.

Why would I want a full Carbon vacuum bagged, Kevlar/Carbon or Fiberglass SUP board? Is there a difference between the way a stand up paddle board is made?

The balance of weight, strength and cost is the biggest difference. Carbon is extremely stiff and light, so a 100% Carbon SUP is going to be super light and very stiff. Carbon Fiber is more expensive, but if you are putting on miles or if you're an Elite Stand Up racer then this is the only construction for you.

Kevlar/Carbon Vacuum construction is a marriage of light and tough. Kevlar is unique in its ability to resist tearing and puncture, and this is why it is popularly used in bullet-proof vests. This is an ideal layup for someone who is paddling or racing on rivers, lakes and beaches with cobblestones or rocks, or simply looking for a lighter SUP, but unwilling to sacrifice durability. The carbon keeps the board very light, while the kevlar helps make the SUP strong.

Lahui Kai fiberglass boards are the toughest on the market. These stand up boards are meant to last. If you are looking for a board that is going to last and maintain its quality finish for years to come, then this is the layup for you. Perfect for rental programs, recreational use or anyone looking for a durable performance touring SUP. This is the SUP layup for a racer on a budget or someone who needs to store a board outside.

What is vacuum bagged construction?

A vacuum is actually used to create pressure and force the resins into the fibers of the cloth (Carbon, kevlar or Fiberglass). This eliminates extra weight by forcing out excess resin while strengthening the paddle board at the same time.

Lahui Kai Battle of the Paddle 2010
Kelly Margett, Jamie Mitchell, Slater Trout (guest paddler) and Brandi Baksic take first in the Team Relay event

Lahui Kai paddlers took home five gold and two silver in the California leg of the 2010 Battle of the Paddle last weekend (Oct. 2-3) in Dana Point. Race quality boards are now available in North America.

Nine-time World Champion Jamie Mitchell (Australia) and International Champion Brandi Baksic Cumin finished 2nd in their divisions in Saturday’s Elite Race paddling the Lahui Kai 12’6 Race. Both Athletes returned Sunday to finish first in the distance race atop Lahui Kai 14’ boards. Lahui Kai boards also took top honors in both men’s and women’s 12’6 class in the Distance race paddled by Australia’s Angela and Paul Jackson. The LK team caped off the weekend by coming out on top in a hard fought battle for 1st place in the team relay event.

“It was a great weekend for Lahui Kai,” said SUP ATX’s Mike Bill. “The continual push for a high level of performance is what really drives the innovation and development of the sport of SUP… it is no wonder these guys are always on top.” Lahui Kai’s victories come in the wake of last years 1st men’s and women’s Elite and Relay victories at the same location and July’s multiple top four finishes in Hawaii.

Thanks to collaboration between SUP ATX and Lahui Kai, Lahui Kai race boards are now available in North America. For more information call 1-866-4-SUP-ATX or 1-512-517-5417 or Email Us

Brandi Baksic on the 2010 Battle of the Paddle

WOW!!!! what an awesome end to the 2010 race season. The BOP California turned out to be everything that it promised to be, a true Battle of the Paddle. Thanks to Rainbow Sandals for another incredible event! BOP, from Brandi's eyeview:

Day 1, the Elite Race: I arrived about 2 hours before the elite race, super excited with lots of extra energy (adrenaline) running through my body. Pre-race I was able to meet some of the new girls that I had heard about or had been facebooking with throughout the year, girls like Annabel from New Zealand, Heather from PR, and finally met Anne-Marie as well. I also met up with Candice in the parking lot where we plotted our strategy, Go Fast! That's really all we had, that, and pray that God would spare us on the buoy turns. Race day itself is pretty tense. Some competitors like to be alone and interact little prerace as they concentrate on the days events. For me, I'm not sure what I do. I think I am all over the place. I just know that that day, I was just ready to go, super eager! Anyhow, the men's race launched a minute before the girls race, and then we were off. It was pretty much me, Candice, and Jenny to the first buoy where we caught the back end of the men's group. We then headed to the south buoy at Thor's Hammer, where the carnage and the race would begin. From there, the race was on. The first 4 laps, Candice and I switched leads back and forth. It was crazy, fun and exciting! Tracy dictated our race play by play on the loud speaker, "Candice is in the lead, now Brandi is in the lead!" It was play by play action, she got me excited to see the outcome. Well, we all know the outcome, in the end Candice took the victory, and I finished 2nd. I was super stoked!!!!! Candice is a great competitor, and made the race so much fun. Congrats to her for sure!

Day 2, the distance race: Once again I arrived a couple hours early. I think I was one of the first competitors there. I knew I had to get my board to the OnIt booth and I was up, so I figured I might as well get to the race site early. The distance race, for me, is pretty low stress, in comparison to the elite race. Pretty much, you're either faster than your ompetitors or you're not. Not too many variables, go straight there, and come back. Pretty simple. I had a really good race that day. I felt strong throughout and the conditions were unreal. (especially compared to last years distance race.) I completed the race in 1st place on my Lahui Kai 14ft. Once again, super stoked!!!!!!!
Day2, the relay: The relay race was simply, off the hook excitement!!! Basically, I was on a kick ass team. Me, Jamie Mitchell, Slater Trout, and Kelly Margetts all teamed up to form the SUPCo/Lahui Kai team. Due to some "technical difficulties" after our first leg we started off in 12th place. Things weren't looking so hot at first. But, we all dug deep, and slowly but surely we inched our way back up. The 1st round of the race was led by the Hobie, Bark and Starboard teams. Then, during Slaters second round we realized he had passed the Bark team whom the announcers had been saying were in 2nd place. Hobie had a pretty sizeable lead on us at that point, probably a couple of hundred yards. Going second in the rotation, I headed out to chase Chuck Patterson, ok, maybe not so much chase, but more like try not to let him gap me any more. I think I did ok. Kelly went third and cut our gap down to about 20-30 yards as he chased down Emmy. And then it was on, Jamie vs Byron. From the get go, I had my money on Jamie. No disrespect to Byron, but come on, it was Jamie. As they both rounded the first outside buoy Jamie caught a bump that shot him up equal with Byron, as they the turned the last outside buoy the race was on head to head. On the last turn Jamie cuaght a bump/swell that only Jamie Mitchell could have caught. kudos!!!! Oh, yeah, we won!!!! So much fun and excitement!!! Again super stoked!!!!!!

Super Stoked: I can't begin to express my gratitude to my supporters and sponsors. They have all been integral in my success and pure enjoyment of the sport. Thank you sooooooooooo much to: God, Lahui Kai Paddleboards, SUP Company, QuickBlade Paddles, Watermans Applied Science, Crush Eyewear, Sports Performance Institute, OnIt Pro, ZsuZsi Sportkini, Larry Allison Race Fins, 2XU, Inno racks, Sambazon, my daughter Summer and incredible husband Mike.

Ciao for now,

Brandi Baksic
